Thinking Aloud: How to love… What a search on Google!

GOOGLE_SEARCHHello beautiful people! Welcome to this week’s edition of Thinking Aloud with @OgadiRich. The focus of this edition which is rather on a lighter mood is on what we; Nigerian people searched on Google for year 2012. Sometime in December last year, I saw as Darren Jordan of Aljazeera couldn’t hold back a little laughter  as he dropped the news of our 2012 search trends on Google with, ‘How to love, how to romance and to rap’ topping the list of top ten  ‘How To’ respectively.

I was instantly taken aback by the news, albeit on a lighter mood. I started thinking and wondering – ‘what a search'; of all topics… I immediately jumped the gun and posted it on facebook. The post attracted objection from one my scholar friends who said there were so many young people who used the search engine for intellectual and academic interests; which I never doubted. Instead, I went into further research on same Google and found out that, actually the search trends were categorized.

In a particular category, Jamb topped the list, followed by Mozat, Boko Haram, ASUU strike, Google news, Eskimi, Whitney Houston, Vanguard news, NNPC recruitment and facebook at the tenth position. In the category of ‘What Is’, “what is love” topped the list, followed by what is computer, biology, government, economics, education, communication, chemistry, money and science. In that of ‘How To’, “how to love” topped the list, followed by how to romance, rap, toast, crochet, dress, assage, blog, freestyle and how to concentrate. In top ten searched sports teams; Chelsea topped the list, followed by Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester Utd, Reading, AC Milan, Man City and Everton.  Top searched people were as follows: Whitney Houston, Victor Moses, Ronaldinho, Van Persie, Nuri Sahin, Usain bolt, Hulk, Davido, Eden Hazard and Rashidi Yekini. In the category of top searched Nigerian musician, Davido took the lead, followed by MI, Dbanj, Psquare, Timaya, Ice Prince, Tiwa Savage, Tuface, Flavour and Asa.The last but not the least was top searched Nollywood celebrities – with Mercy Johnson at the top, followed by Ini Edo, Tonto Dike, Funke Akindele, Genevieve, Jim Iyke, Chika Ike, Van Vicker, Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke-Idahosa.

Among these searches, is it really out of place for one to be surprised that “how to love”, “romance” and “toast” of all topics… topped the list in the category of ‘How To’? Maybe young people want to change the age long notion that Africans – Nigerians are not romantic…! I wonder! On the other hand, I’m not surprised at all that Chelsea topped the list of 10 most search clubs by Nigerians! After all, the sky they say is ‘Blues’. Yes, this proves them wrong – those that say Chelsea fans are this and that. We are smart fans…; we take time to find out one or two things about the club we support. I’m rather surprised that Arsenal fans still search their club on Google despite heartbreaks… Maybe they wanted to know the reasons behind their trophiless seasons. What of Man Utd of all people that took sixth position? Maybe, it was Man U fans that were busy searching how to love, romance and toast! I’m just thinking aloud…! Finally, I keep thinking of what I could achieve for people to search for me on Google! May be I will someday lead the first Nigerian successful voyage into the space…..Thinking Aloud!

See you next week!
