While sitting in a cozy reception, waiting to meet with an acquaintance, I decided to flick through an idle newspaper in front of me. As I riffle the pages, a certain headline caught my attention. It read: “WHEN HONESTY CURES MAN OF POVERTY.”
Somewhat curious, I decided to pore over the story. According to the real-life story, a certain lady known as Sarah Darling unknowingly dropped her expensive diamond engagement ring into a homeless beggar’s coin cup. The lady was so devastated when she later realized that her diamond ring was missing! She searched everywhere for it but to no avail. Fortunately, few days later, while she was passing through the beggar’s patch, the wretched beggar strode towards her and said, “Excuse me, ma’am. You dropped this expensive diamond ring into my coin cup the last time you visited here. I guess it was a mistake. Here is it. I kept it safe for you.” Sarah was completely bowled over and exultant! That act of honesty generated huge media attention and led to Sarah’s grateful fiancé setting up a website which has already raised over $145’000 for the wretched beggar.
When I finished reading the story, I tried to replay the scene in my mind—but this time, slowly. I was reflective. I felt highly stirred and challenged by how that poverty-stricken, homeless beggar decided to choose values instead of valuables. Friend, what that beggar did was right. But then as at the time he made such decision to return that diamond ring to Sarah, many would have thought he was idiotic. I mean, he’d been a beggar for years and here was a single diamond ring with a monetary value that could transform his life forever and he wanted to return it? Was he damn insane?! Many would have voiced. But they would have been off the beam.
OK, if you don’t mind, let’s retreat pointing probing fingers from ‘them’ and point them directly unto ‘you.’
When you’re faced with the decision of choosing between values and valuables, what do you settle for? Looking at the way you live your life or run your various endeavours (and be honest with yourself), do you put aside your values when you’re served with a platter of valuables? Just like that wretched beggar, can you uphold your values even when it’s obvious that doing otherwise will bring you some juices? Of course, you can answer in the affirmative, but remember that life will always validate the authenticity of your answer. The truth is that life has various creative, unannounced ways of revealing our true positions as far as values and valuables are concerned. Therefore, choose which boat you want to sail and hang on to. But if you asked me, I would scream: Choose values!
I will continue on this piece next time…
