VICTORY UBANI: IN PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS…

Victory C. Ubani

Today, we bring to you the story of Victory Chijioke Ubani our fan who is among the teeming population of young Nigerians that are courageous enough to chart new courses for their lives. Her story isn’t about creating a job for herself due to unemployment since she has a job already; rather, her story is what we have termed ‘pursuit for happiness’.

Victory is the brain behind VIC3 Fashion House, an outfit that provides quality and creatively hand-crafted; shoes, bags, jewelry, jackets, and blazers all made with African prints. VIC3 sells these products to retailers and also to wholesalers; they also resell original leather bags.

Her Drive…

Victory in her own words said her desire to showcase the creativity in Africa, the richness and beauty of our culture, spurred her to launch out with this venture. Having discovered before now, that it was mainly foreigners that appreciate and patronize our African pieces here In Nigeria and outside; it was exciting to see that Nigerians are now also responding, appreciating and flaunting their rich culture.

In her words “I have always had a flair for fashion, but the creativity involved in making use of the African prints our mothers used as wrappers in those days while I was still young(they still use it), is what I love the most.”

How she started…

Read her words: “one day, I was browsing through the display pictures of my friends on BB, and I saw this beautiful shoe with Ankara accessories, I was so excited, I began asking questions, doing a lot of research and finally made up my mind to start creating mine. I needed a lot of funds but didn’t have enough money to start, so I decided to make a bag and a shoe for myself to use as a marketing strategy. Whenever I wore them, I got this look from people that say ‘wow lovely!’ but I needed more than compliments. I needed people to ask me if I could make for them and so I decided to make another one from my little savings, with that a lot of people started asking if I could make for them. Whenever they make a purchase, I use the money to work on more items and save up my little profit from it, and though it wasn’t much, it was a good start.”

Before VIC3 Fashion House…

In her words, “immediately after NYSC in 2011, I worked with a lady that owned a business of making and selling children’s footwear as her P.A for three months, then I moved to an Engineering Company where I currently work.” Yes, you read that correctly! She has plans of leaving the Engineering company as its Accounts Officer to focus fully on VIC3 Fashion House, but it appears this young woman is also a strategist, carefully planning her every move. When we probed her further on how she manages both a demanding job and a nascent venture, she said “I am working towards resigning by December this year for the joy of fulfilling what my heart desires”. What do you call that? We call it courage!

Growth so far…

Unlike many out there who would rather not work on their idea due to no office space or workshop, Victory opted to start her venture right from the comfort of her house where she lives, and orders for her products have kept increasing. We are sure that she will soon inform us of the opening of her own personal work station, we are so looking forward to that! Like the saying goes “no man is an island”, VIC3 Fashion House has three other members who support with the production process. Talk about creating jobs for others instead of endlessly being perturbed  about the unemployment situation!

The challenges…

You don’t think it is as easy as it sounds, do you? Better not! Everything worthwhile has its fair share of challenges and VIC3 Fashion House is not an exception. According to Victory, the major challenge her venture has been facing is that lots of Nigerians are yet to embrace the use of these home-made products. To overcome this challenge, her and her team have been leveraging on social media by using photos of products as DPs and profile pictures while also sharing posts and comments about these lovely creative pieces that enriches our wardrobes and enhances our looks.

Future Plans…

Victory is not just zealous about her venture; she has a vision for it and is strategically working towards achieving this vision. She has the long term vision of organizing fashion shows, collaborating with other fashion houses to create more awareness about their works from one state to another”. Hmmmm! Ambitious but quite realistic if hard work remains at the front burner. Just like the entertainment industry, the likes of Victory are really taking the fashion industry in Nigeria and Africa to greater heights. Kudos!
